KASHIWAZAKI, Japan (AFP) - The world's largest nuclear plant was ordered Wednesday to stay shut indefinitely after Japan's deadly earthquake, as it revealed a radiation leak was worse than first thought. 

The sprawling Kashiwazaki-Kariwa power plant suffered a radiation leak and dozens of other problems in Monday's 6.8-magnitude quake, whose epicentre was just nine kilometres (five miles) away.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), the operator of the plant, said the water that leaked into the sea was 1.5 times more radioactive than it initially estimated. But it said the level still did not pose a health risk.

The scare grew Tuesday as it admitted 50 operating faults, including a fire, leakages of water and oil, misplaced duct pipes and broken equipment.

Alpha Centauri is 4.3 light-years from the Sun, but Beta Centauri is 460 light-years from the Sun - more than 100 times farther away.

 

Alpha and Beta Centauri are in the constellation "Centaurus", the Centaur.


(Hence those names for the stars.) The Southern Cross is a different constellation, "Crux", the Latin word for cross.


The two constellations are next to each other in the southern sky, with the front legs of the Centaur on one side of the Cross, and the back legs on the other side of it.


 

Alpha is a multiple star system, consisting of two stars close to one another, and a third, called Proxima Centauri, orbiting that pair at a large distance.


At present, Proxima is about 0.1 light-years closer than Alpha and its companion.
